Addictive rice and beans recipe

Delicious rice and beans recipe

Nothing beats a nice rice and beans when you really crave it. Every Puertorrican can attest to that! Doesn’t matter if you cook the beans and rice separate or all together, its delicious.



2 cups of large rice

3 cups de red beans, softened

2  cups of water

1 spoon of salt

2 spoons of “achiote”oil or vegetable oil

3 spoons of sofrito (see recipe here)

1/2 patch of tomato sauce

1/ 2 patch of cooking ham in small cubes (not necessary if you are vegetarian or vegan)

2 spoons of suffer olives


  1. Pour the oil in a pot over medium-high heat
  2. Sauté the ham until brown
  3. Include the sofrito “sauce” and go sitting, without letting burn
  4. Add beans, tomato sauce, olives, salt (your taste) and cook for 5 minutes
  5. Add the rice, water and mix well (or do rice separate)
  6. Cook over medium heat-high until the water boils, then lower the low heat, stir and put the lid on the pot
  7. Let cook covered for the next 20-25 minutes or until grain is well cooked (or the beans and softened)
