In colonial days Puerto Rico was known as “the key to the Caribbean,” and what is a key without it’s lock?

Bring your hat, water bottle and walking shoes on this expertly guided tour of Castillo San Felipe del Morro and learn how and why this fort was critical to Spain’s success in the region.

We meet right outside El Convento Hotel so you’ll learn about Old San Juan’s oldest sections as you make your way with our bilingual tour guide to El Morro. The fort sits atop a high promontory overlooking San Juan Bay’s entrance. It was used not only by the Spanish in colonial times, but by the United States military in WWII.

This walking tour unravels several decades of history – from pirate times and dungeons to modern mid century American “Fort Brooke” which housed a swimming pool and movie cinema for the troops. Perfect for all ages, this history walking tour will explore landmarks such as La Rogativa, the oldest square in Old San Juan, El Convento which is a former convent, briefly touch upon La Catedral de San Juan Bautista – Old San Juan’s venerated cathedral is Puerto Rico’s grandest religious building, and of course the city’s impressive defensive system: its walls and Castillo El Morro.

El Morro has many stories and legends. Come hear many of them and leave with a better understanding of the history behind the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, its unique ties to the United States and its role as a military defense system that still endures to this day.
